Key update on Tyler Bertuzzi's future with Leafs

The scrappy forward is set to become a free agent.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have several pending free agents on their roster, with perhaps the most notable being scrappy forward Tyler Bertuzzi.

As you remember, he was lured to the Leafs, his third Original 6 squad after having played for the Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins, with a one-year contract worth $5 million last summer. And it seems as though there is mutual interest between the two sides on getting an extension done.

According to Todd Reynolds, who is Bertuzzi's agent, both sides are in "we'll see" mode:

“We’ve had productive talks,” Reynolds said on Tuesday. “But the player realizes that there are other areas for the team to address. We’ll see where it goes.”

As previously indicated, it isn't so much the dollar figure that could hinder an extension for Bertuzzi with the Leafs, but rather the term of a potential deal. Reports indicate that Bertuzzi's desire for a lengthy extension was the chief reason why Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman decided to part ways with him, as his style of play makes him prone to injury troubles.

We'll keep our eyes peeled for any further developments with Bertuzzi and the Leafs.
