Kelly Hrudey goes nuclear on Mitch Marner during Game 4.
Former NHL goaltender Kelly Hrudey goes gloves off on Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner.
I think it's safe to say that former National Hockey League goaltender Kelly Hrudey will be canceling his membership to the Mitch Marner fan club after this rant on Saturday night.
Hrudey, who has defended Marner in the past, went absolutely nuclear on the Maple Leafs star forward after what Hrudey appeared to perceive as a tantrum from Marner in Game 4. Hrudey pulled no punches during his rant, and quite frankly sounded more than a little disappointed in Marner while making his comments.
"In Game 3 I tried to defend Mitch Marner," began Hrudey during the second intermission. "I said I thought I saw a lot more signs of a guy putting in an effort and trying to create something well I can't defend him tonight. He's just not very good and he's not trying as hard as he needs to."
Hrudey would isolate two specific incidents during the course of the game in which he felt Marner had either let his team down or had displayed an attitude that Hrudey sounded absolutely disgusted with.
"There's a play at the side of the net and he's taken down ever so slightly, a tiny little slash, and then he's looking at the ref," said Hrudey with disgust. "Just get up and play, don't feel sorry for yourself."
The second incident involved a moment in which cracks began to show between the Maple Leafs top stars on the bench, with Hrudey just going nuclear on Marner over how he acted during that particular incident.
"Matthews is fed up so he looks over at Marner... but then do something about it... and now Marner come on throwing your gloves means nothing," said Hrudey throwing his hands up. "When you're 8 or 9 years old you do that because you don't know any better, but not when you're in this position."
Ouch.
