John Tortorella snaps during post game press conference.
John Tortorella was furious on Saturday after his team lost to the Boston Bruins.
Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella is in a mood.
Tortorella and his Philadelphia Flyers appeared to have a commanding lead during the first 40 minutes of play against the Boston Bruins on Saturday, but that would quickly evaporate during the game's third period in which the Bruins would score a pair of unanswered goals. That in turn would lead to the Bruins taking the game in overtime, which in turn resulted in a furious Tortorella addressing the media, specifically on the topic of officiating, during his post game media availability.
Tortorella expressed his displeasure with how diving has become commonplace in the National Hockey League, even going so far as to indicate that perhaps he should be teaching his players to engage in that type of behavior.
"Yeah, let me start. One thing I teach my team to do is not dive," said an angry Tortorella. "Maybe I should start teaching them that, the way this has gone here, the way this shit goes on, maybe I should start teaching them how to dive."
The play that I suspect Tortorella was upset about was a late call against Flyers forward Garnet Hathaway that was made after Bruins defenseman Mason Lohrei fell to the ice after what looked like very minimal contact on the part of Hathaway. As you can see in the clip below, Tortorella was expressing his displeasure after the call from behind the bench.
I must say I completely agree with Tortorella that diving is a blight on the sport of hockey and if anything I would like to see the NHL enforce stricter rules against that type of behavior. No one wants to see a bunch of hockey players flopping all over the ice, and if players believe they can gain an advantage that way without being punished there's no doubt that they will look to exploit that advantage.
That being said, Tortorella can complain about diving all he wants but it did look like his own team was playing that game as well today when rookie forward Matvei Michkov went down a little easy today during this sequence involving Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy.
That however did not stop Tortorella from expressing his belief that he felt his team was a little cheated on Saturday.
"It's one of the things we talk about most as a team, we've got to play an honest game." added Torts. "There's no cheating. There's no embarrassing referees, you don't embarrass the referees. The shit that went on here tonight is just ridiculous. I'm proud of the way our team played. Did we piss another one away, yeah, but other people had a little bit to do with that also."
I doubt anything will come of this as, although Tortorella was pointing the finger at the NHL's officiating, it was pretty mild all things considered.
