John Tavares opens the scoring... by scoring on his own team.
A rough start on Sunday night against the Wild for former Maple Leafs captain John Tavares.
It was a rough start on Sunday night for the Toronto Maple Leafs as they faced off against the Minnesota Wild.
It would be former Maple Leafs captain John Tavares who would open the scoring but unfortunately he would do so by scoring a goal into his own net. Tavares would try to clear the puck in front of the net but would instead inadvertently tip the puck past Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz for the first goal of the game.
The goal was credited to Wild forward Ryan Hartman, although for a moment it looked as though no one would get credit for scoring it at all. The initial replays that were made available on the broadcast appeared to show that Hartman had kicked it in the net, and although it looked like that was definitely what had happened initially it was not actually true.
A different angle would eventually show that it was in fact Tavares' stick that had sent the puck into the Leafs net and, although there was indeed a kicking motion from Hartman's skate, Hartman actually never touched the puck at all.
Here is a look at the angle that showed that Tavares touched the puck and not Hartman:
A tough break to start this one for the Maple Leafs, and an early gift for the Wild.
