While Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman has been extremely active this offseason in making additions to the team, one particular player who remains unsigned with Training Camp just over one month away from starting is forward Joe Veleno.
But according to Veleno himself, he's not worried about getting a new deal done before the start of the new season in October and stated that negotiations are ongoing.
"We continue to negotiate and that is our situation,” he said. "We hope to have an agreement soon. There’s no rush as I’m the only player left to sign in Detroit. We will take it day by day and we will see.”
The former 2018 1st round draft pick of the Red Wings skated in his first full NHL season last year, scoring nine goals with 11 assists in 81 games played. He's also just wrapped up his entry level contract that saw him carry a salary cap hit of $894,167.
“I think last year I took another step in my game,” Veleno said. “I improved in a lot of aspects of my game. I worked on what they told me and I want to continue to grow next year. I feel like I can be on yet another level. It’s a big year for me and I’m ready for what’s to come.”
Of course, Veleno is well aware of all the new faces in town, and is excited for the future.
“We want to be competitive and I think we’re close for the playoffs,” Veleno said. “We were a surprising team last year. There have been additions of veterans, we continue this year to add a little more depth and a star with (Alex) DeBrincat.”
