Jim Montgomery reveals shocking reason David Pastrnak did not play in third period.
Jim Montgomery may have kicked off another controversy in Boston after speaking to reporters on Sunday night.
The head coach of the Boston Bruins has shown time and time again that he isn't afraid to be confrontational when it comes to the top stars on his roster, and on Sunday night Jim Montgomery reminded everyone of that fact.
There was some concern regarding the health and status of Bruins forward David Pastrnak after Pastrnak was glued to the bench during the third period, but Montgomery quickly dismissed those concerns during his post game media availability. Montgomery confirmed that there had been no injury, or anything of that nature, when he revealed that it had been his decision to keep Pastrnak on the bench for the entire third period.
That decision may very well kick off a bit of a controversy in Boston but it is hard to argue with Montgomery's decision given that the Bruins maintained their 2 goal lead throughout the third period despite his decision to sit one of the best players at his disposal.
As for the reason why? Montgomery would not share any additional details.
"Coach’s decision in the third period," said Montgomery after the game. "That’s all I’m gonna comment on."
Pastrnak didn't have a terrible game, putting 7 shots on goal, but he failed to find the back of the net despite having some pretty good chances to do so. This for example was a good chance during the game's first period but Pastrnak didn't seem to get much power behind his shot.
Calling out his star players, including Pastrnak himself, has worked out for Montgomery in the past and it will be interesting to see if he can find the same success this time around with his decision to bench Pastrnak for an entire period.
