Jeff Petry is happy to be a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins, but somewhat unsurprisingly it sounds like his family is overjoyed at the news as well.
On Sunday, Petry spoke to the media for the first time as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins and one of the questions that came up was how he learned of the trade. Petry admitted that he initially had missed the call regarding the trade deal but would go on to reveal that both he and his family were overjoyed at the news of being traded.
"I was downstairs playing with two of my boys. My phone was in the other room and I had a missed call from the Canadiens GM," said Petry. "I was like okay, something’s up. As I was picking up my phone my agent called, and he told me."
"I went up and told my wife and the kids. Everyone was extremely happy and excited to be joining the Penguins," he admitted.
While I'm sure that the family was genuinely excited at the prospect of Petry joining the likes of Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin, I suspect that much of that joy came at the relief that they wouldn't have to spend another season with Petry playing in Montreal. It was a poorly kept secret that the Petry family wasn't happy in Montreal, with his wife openly expressing that she had been the victim of discrimination on social media and had also publicly called out fans for harassing her family.
Things got so bad following the All-Star break last season that Petry's wife and kids decided to remain in their home in Michigan in order to avoid going back to Canada which had implemented very strict measures as a result of the pandemic at the time. The decision was even made public when Julie Petry published an Instagram post addressing the decision, one that still remains up on her account even now.
Hopefully this will make things easier for both Petry and his family moving forward.
