The Wild have a new record!

The Minnesota Wild have a new franchise record and they have their captain to thank for it.

On Sunday, the Wild faced off against the Nashville Predators in what would prove to be a 4-3 victory for the Wild, and it was during the course of that game that Jared Spurgeon would pass a familiar name in the Minnesota Wild record books.

Although Spurgeon would record 2 shots on goal during the contest, it would be an assist that would break the record for him as he recorded the 370th point of his career as a player for the Minnesota Wild. No defenseman in franchise history has reached that plateau before giving Spurgeon sole possession of the record for most points by a Minnesota Wild defenseman, surpassing former longtime teammate Ryan Suter (369 points) who previously held the record.

Of course this record only applies to defensemen so there are still players ahead of Spurgeon on the all-time list, but he does have a chance to continue his climb. Currently Spurgeon ranks 4th on the all time list and the next man in front of him in third place is none other than long time Wild forward Zach Parise. Parise recorded 400 points during his tenure with the Wild which means that Spurgeon only needs 31 more points to overtake him. Even Marian Gaborik's 437 points with the Wild, good enough for second all time, are within the reach of Spurgeon but I doubt very much that we will ever see him come close to the record holder Mikko Koivu who had 709 career points with the Wild.
