The New York Rangers cleared out their dressing room on Wednesday after failing to the New Jersey Devils in Game 7 of their first round series on Monday night.
The Blue Shirts never expected to be out this early as many insiders and pundits saw them in a deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. After all, GM Chris Drury had made some bold, necessary moves, adding Vincent Trochek in the offseason and then acquiring Vladimir Tarasenko and Patrick Kane at the NHL trade deadline.
But when captain Jacob Trouba faced reporters on Wednesday, he had one explanation for the Rangers’ elimination, per Greg Wyshynski of ESPN.
“I don’t think this is all on us. I think you have to give them a lot of credit. They’re one of the best teams in the league this year. Thought they played like it.”
While it does not sound like Trouba is taking a lot of accountability for New York’s elimination, he sure is giving a lot of credit to the Devils, who will face the Carolina Hurricanes in the second round, with Game 1 taking place later tonight.
On social media, Rangers’ fans were disappointed with Trouba’s answer and lack of accountability.
The Rangers were in control of the series two games in, but quickly lost momentum. They also struggled with the Devils’ speed, and let’s not talk about how absent Artemi Panarin was throughout the series.
Trouba better take on some accountability along with his teammates for next year’s run if they want a different result, especially in the first round.
