Jack Campbell sounds off on his disappointing return to Toronto.
The former Maple Leaf speaks to the Toronto media.
When he was a member of the Los Angeles Kings, goaltender Jack Campbell was a relatively unheralded backup behind veteran goaltender Jonathan Quick and it wasn't until he was traded that he truly made a name for himself in the National Hockey League. Although he had plenty of on-ice experience with the Kings, it would be in Toronto that Campbell would eventually establish himself as a starter in the NHL and it stands to reason that the organization will always mean a great deal to him for the opportunity it provided his career.
On Saturday, Campbell returns to Toronto for the first time since he left the Maple Leafs as an unrestricted free agent and signed with their rivals, the Edmonton Oilers, and as you might expect Campbell was asked to share his thoughts on his return prior to the game today.
"It's exciting," said Campbell of a return to Toronto. "I have a lot of good friends here and the city really embraced me during my time here. I have a lot of great memories and things I will cherish my whole life."
Although the moment will no doubt be a special one for Campbell tonight when he returns to his former stomping grounds, he knows the focus remains on the game itself.
"Obviously a big game tonight for the fellas so it's an exciting day for us," said Campbell. "Get to go out and play a top tier team."
Unfortunately for Campbell his play has not been strong this season and as a result he won't be getting the start tonight in Toronto, something he admitted he was disappointed about.
"Absolutely," said Campbell when asked if he was disappointed about not getting the start. "You guys know I hold myself to a pretty high standard and it just hasn't gone that way yet this year but I'm working hard and I know I'll get there.
