We havent heard about Erik Karlsson in Edmonton ever since the Oilers acquired Mattias Ekholm in a trade from the Nashville Predators ahead of the deadline. test

Until now…

The Athletic’s Eric Duhatschek believes there could be a possibility of the Oilers exploring a trade for the Sharks’ blue liner during the summer. Days after the trade deadline, chatter emerged that insider Pierre LeBrun revealed how the Oilers and Sharks just couldn’t make the money work, but that there may be an opportunity to consummate a trade this offseason when both sides have more financial flexibility.

Edmonton will however need to find a way to accommodate Karlsson’s contract as he is signed through 2026-27 with an average annual value of $11.5 million.

According to Cap Friendly, the Oilers have 15 NHL players under contract with about $8.5 million in projected cap space and pending RFAs Evan Bouchard, Ryan McLeod and Klim Kostin looking for new deals. There are also four pending unrestricted free agents.

It might be possible to see Edmonton trying to get rid of goalie Jack Campbell by shipping him off to San Jose in a Karlsson trade. It is no secret that Campbell has struggled in the cage since signing a five-year deal in Edmonton last summer worth $5 million annually. If the Sharks are willing, they have the room to take on his salary. But the Oilers would have to give up more and potentially send two or three prospects, such as Phillip Broberg and Xavier Bourgault.

The Oilers aren’t going to be the only team inquiring again about Karlsson in the offseason when they have more cap room.
Expect a busy summer ahead with Karlsson’s name mentioned several times a week!
