The Detroit Red Wings have just recalled goaltender Jack Campbell from the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins under emergency conditions.

Earlier on Friday, the Red Wings announced that goalie Cam Talbot reaggravated a lower-body injury that idled him for 10 days recently and will not be available Saturday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Coach Derek Lalonde said Ville Husso will start against the Maple Leafs and the plan was to recall a goalie from the Grand Rapids Griffins to back-up.

That goalie is Campbell.

While Alex Lyon (lower-body injury) did get in a full practice Friday, he won’t be available until at least Wednesday.

As for Campbell, he was reassigned to Grand Rapids a few weeks ago when he returned from his absence. He entered the NHL Player Assistance Program on October 4th after appearing in just one pre-season game with the Wings.

In July, Detroit signed Campbell to a one-year contract worth $775,000. In 2022-23, he signed with the Oilers, and with his newly penned contract, he was expected to be the starting netminder in Edmonton. His deal was however bought out after a disastrous time with the Oilers.

He could get another shot with the Red Wings and it starts with this emergency recall.
