The understanding when the Edmonton Oilers were able to pry goaltender Jack Campbell away from the Toronto Maple Leafs is that he would be another critical piece in their puzzle of continuing their new-found postseason success that saw them advance beyond the second round for the first time since the magical run of 2006.
His 4.27 GAA and .873 save percentage are some of the worst amongst starting NHL goaltenders, and it raises serious questions as to whether he's simply in a slump or if it's a bigger issue.
In the meantime, backup Stuart Skinner has appeared to have wrestled the starter's job away, with a far more respectable 2.47 goals against average and .932 save percentage.
“I think he’s one of the stories of our young season, when you look at people who maybe are outperforming expectations,” Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft told reporters of Skinner. “In terms of individuals, Stuart would be right at the top of that list.”
Campbell knows that he absolutely must improve his play if the Oilers are to have any sustained success.
“I owe it to this team to bring my ‘A’ game, and they haven’t seen it yet,” Campbell told reporters recently. “I’m going to get through this. … The boys deserve it, and I can’t wait to show them."
The Oilers host the hot Vegas Golden Knights tomorrow night at Rogers Place.
