Islanders share terrible update on Mike Reilly's injury.
The Islanders share a terrible update on one of the scariest incidents we've seen so far this season.
The New York Islanders have shared a terrible update on what was one of the scariest incidents of the 2024-25 National Hockey League regular season thus far.
According to an official announcement, injured Islanders defenseman Mike Reilly is now out indefinitely after he appeared to be seriously injured following a hit from Buffalo Sabres forward Jordan Greenway a little over a week ago.
The hit seemed pretty textbook, with Greenway driving Reilly hard into the boards, but the damage appeared to come when Reilly fell off balance and slammed the back of his head into the ice. Reilly appeared to have been knocked out cold by the impact on the ice, and would lay motionless on the frozen playing surface for several long moments before appearing to regain consciousness.
A stretcher was brought out to tend for Reilly, but he would eventually skate off the ice on his own two feet with the help of his teammates. You can see a replay of the entire incident in the short clip below:
Despite how bad things looked it initially sounded like Reilly was going to be ok, at least relatively speaking, with the Islanders listing him as day to day with an upper body injury just one day after the incident took place.
It is unclear what has changed between the initial report from the Islanders and now but, today's update seems much more in line with just how serious things looked on the ice at the time.
I would like to wish Reilly a full and speedy recovery, although it does sound like he may be out for quite some time.
