Insider hints at a big potential trade between the Maple Leafs and Rangers.

The rebuilding New York Rangers have a pretty good problem on their hands at the moment and that may have picked the interest of at least one other team around the National Hockey League. 

In a recent article for the New York Post, Rangers insider Larry Brooks was singing the praises of Rangers backup goaltender Alexandar Georgiev after the 23 year old undrafted Bulgarian went back to back games for the Rangers due to an undisclosed ailment left star goalie Henrik Lundqvist at less than 100%. Brooks pointed to the fact that the Rangers showcase of Georgiev this season has paid off with the young netminder recording a solid 2.90 goals against average and .919 save percentage over the 13 games he has played with the Rangers this season. Interestingly enough during his comments the veteran insider hinted at the possibility of a trade being in the horizon, one that has come up more than a few times in Toronto, Canada.

The Rangers will have themselves a mighty tough call here. But the more Georgiev plays, the more management will know. And the more other teams such as the Maple Leafs will know, too.

That is a good thing.

The Maple Leafs are believed to be in the market for a backup goaltender with current backup Michael Hutchinson simply unable to get the job done for the Maple Leafs when starting goaltender Frederik Andersen has required a rest. some believe that the performance of Hutchinson this season has already led to a greater workload for Andersen then Maple Leafs brass would have preferred, something that would increase their need to find another option.

Now that does not mean that the Leafs would necessarily be going after Georgiev in a trade however as the Rangers also have a second option in their system. Rangers fourth round pick Igor Shestyorkin is currently with the Hartford Wolfpack of the American Hockey League where he has been dominant this season with a 2.05 goals against average and a .927 save percentage through his first 14 games. This is what Brooks meant when he said the Rangers have a "mighty tough call here," with both Georgiev and Shestyorkin having good showings this season. The Rangers will want to continue to build up assets as they move through their current rebuild, but choosing which talent they will give up to do so won't be so easy.
