Huge scenario emerges linking Oilers and Bruins for perfect trade!

At the start of the 2023-24 season, everyone was expecting the Edmonton Oilers to be favorites to win the Stanley Cup. However, with the second half the campaign underway, Edmonton has a 19-15-1 record for a total of 39 points in 35 games, good for 21st overall in league standings, but still a point out of the last Wild Card playoff spot.

It was recently suggested by Chris Johnston that the Oilers should go after Pittsburgh Penguins’ Jake Guentzel and therefore bring Leon Draisaitl the perfect winger to crank up the offense ever more for Edmonton. However, it seems like a tough move to pull, especially with Guentzel being in the final year of a contract with an average annual value of $6 million. Furthermore, the Penguins could ask for a first-rounder and a prospect in return. Would the Oilers be willing to spend that much?

Now another trade scenario has emerged and could be the right one for the Oilers in fixing their obvious issue in between the pipes. The Oilers have previously been linked to the Montreal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings, who both carry three goalies and are potentially looking to make a move. Rumours have also linked the Oilers to St. Louis Blues’ Jordan Binnington and Philadelphia Flyers’ Carter Hart, but it feels like it’d be too much finagling to make one of these transactions happen.

Hooked On Hockey Magazine believes the Oilers and general manager Ken Holland should use top forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins ($5.2 million cap) as the key piece and send along a second round pick in the upcoming summer’s NHL Draft to the Boston Bruins in order to acquire goalie Linus Ullmark.

Both Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman saw their names pop up in trade rumors over the summer, though no deal materialized. Ullmark still has term remaining on his current deal at a $5,000,000 cap hit, while Swayman signed a one-year deal in arbitration and can be a free agent next summer. It has been reportedly that the Oilers inquired about Ullmark in the offseason, though nothing came of it.

Would this offer be the right one to land Ullmark and the best insurance in net for Edmonton to get a long playoff run and finality the Stanley Cup captain Connor McDavid and Draisaitl very much deserve?

But let’s not forget… Ullmark has a 16-team no-trade list for this season, and 15 teams for the 2024-25 campaign, which may or may not include the Oilers.

And so, this may remain only a suggestion and dream scenario, Oilers fans…
