The journey to the National Hockey League for former first round pick Shane Wright has not been what many would have predicted, however, the young forward caught a break on Wednesday.
Wright was promoted from AHL Coachella Valley to the Seattle Kraken moments ago. The team is also calling up Ryan Winterton from their affiliate club.
This is Wright’s first callup of the 2023-24 season, though it remains to be seen if he’ll have a chance to carve out a sizeable role. Seattle is in action tomorrow night against the Avalanche in Colorado.
Wright has been up to a good start with the Firebirds so far in 2023-24, racking up four goals and two assists through seven games.
At the start of the NHL campaign, the Kraken had announced that Wright would not be a part of their starting roster, at least not right away, and instead revealed that they would be sending the 19 year old to the American Hockey League for some additional seasoning. He received special exemption to be sent to the AHL over his Ontario Hockey League team, the Windsor Spitfires.
The No. 4 overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft put up one goal and one assist in eight games with the Kraken last season and also recorded six points (four goals and two assists) in eight games with the Firebirds. He then returned to Windsor and added 37 points (15 goals and 22 assists) in 20 games only to rejoin Coachella Valley for its post-season run to the Calder Cup final and contributed nine points (two goals and seven assists) in 24 playoff games.
Let’s hope he gets a shot at cracking the Kraken’s roster and can contribute to Seattle, who currently sits fifth place of the Pacific division with a 4-6-3 record.
