Huge disallowed goal controversy amid tight playoff race leaves many fuming!
Patrick Roy barely spoke after the game, but his statement hit hard. Full story below:
In the last seconds of the third period of the Columbus Blue Jackets’ game in New York, the Islanders thought they had scored the go-ahead goal to get the precious two points in the ongoing tight playoff race in the Eastern conference.
However, Kyle Palmieri’s goal was immediately waved off by officials, and New York ended up losing 4-3 in a shootout.
There was only nine seconds remaining and Palmieri was adamant the goal should count. However, it was not only waved it off for goaltender interference right at the play, but it was also sent to the situation room in Toronto, who ended up confirming the no-goal call on the ice.
After the game, perhaps worried about a hefty fine, Islanders head coach Patrick Roy was left fuming, but still managed to throw this one-liner at the NHL and their situation room.
“If Toronto is afraid to overturn calls made by their referee, we don’t need Toronto,” Roy said. “That’s all I want to say.”
According to the league’s explanation, “Palmieri impaired [goalie Elvis] Merzlikins’ ability to play his position in the crease prior to the goal.”
It was obviously that fans attending the game in New York were also upset with the call.
With one point earned for the shootout loss, the Islanders pulled into a tie with the New York Rangers , one point behind the Montreal Canadiens for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference. Columbus is another point back.
