Goaltender Jack Campbell is up for grabs after being placed on waivers on Sunday.

According to a report from National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman, the Detroit Red Wings have made the decision to place the veteran netminder on waivers Sunday. This decision comes in spite of the fact that Campbell, who signed a one year deal at an average annual value and cap hit of $775,000 with the Red Wings this summer, has not played a single regular season game for the organization this season.

Campbell's career has seemingly been in a freefall since he left the Toronto Maple Leafs following the 2021-22 NHL season, signing a long term deal with the Edmonton Oilers as a free agent. In spite of that deal being a 5 year deal with an average annual value of $5 million per season, Campbell would only play two seasons as a member of the Oilers before the Oilers made the decision to buyout the final 3 years of that deal.

Campbell signed with the Red Wings following the buyout but before ever playing a regular season game for the Red Wings he would enter the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program in early October.

The veteran netminder was expected to start the season in the American Hockey League with the Grand Rapids Griffins, but given his success at the NHL level in the past was no doubt hoping to work his way into a spot on the main roster. Unfortunately for Campbell that has not come to pass, although there does remain plenty of time in the season for him to bounce back.

Any team in the NHL will have the opportunity to pick up Campbell on waivers if they wish to do so, although the uncertainty around him at this time may deter teams, even those in need of help in goal, from taking the risk.

I wish him well with whatever comes next.
