Goalie trade brewing in Detroit!?

Keeping an eye on a pending move from the Red Wings:

Chris Gosselin

There is a logjam in Detroit and Bruce Garrioch of Post Media believes it is time for the Red Wings to do something about it. Down in the AHL, the farm team, the Grand Rapids Griffins are doing great especially thanks to their three-headed monster in net, made of Sebastian Cossa, Jack Campbell, and Ville Husso. The latter has garnered attention with his Husso two shutouts in eight games. He currently holds a 6-1-0 record to go along with a 1.86 goals against average (GAA) and a .935 save percentage (SV%).

Garrioch believes that the Wings need to move Husso, not only to allow Cossa to get more starts in his development, but also because Husso could bring an interesting return to Detroit. The journalist writes:

“An executive said that the Wings would be willing to move Ville Husso but he carries a $4.75-million cap hit and Detroit isn’t in any mood to help the Senators with both teams battling for the same playoff spot.”

Sure, it would be easier in financial terms to move Talbot, who is earning $775,000 this season, however he does not have the best reputation around the league. The former Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs goalie is also still rebuilding his game to be more consistent and could get less interest from rival teams on the market for insurance in goal.

The Ottawa Senators may be looking more closely at this option from Detroit, especially if Linus Ullmark remains out with injury and the team keeps fighting for a playoff spot, they might call GM Steve Yzerman. At the same time, the Red Wings need to think of themselves first, especially after Alex Lyon left last night with an upper-body injury and did not return.

The race is tight in the Eastern Conference and this could be a move that happens closer to the trade deadline on March 7, giving the Red Wings time to see what’s best for them.
