Full 2020 NHL Draft order revealed and teams face changes!

The 2020 NHL draft will be conducted over video conferencing on Oct. 6 and 7 and on Tuesday, the league released the complete order of selections. 

Here’s how the first round will go:

In the second round, the 49th overall pick will be skipped seeing that the Arizona Coyotes forfeited it and their 2021 first-rounder after violating the NHL’s combine testing policy during the 2019-20 campaign.

As explained on the NHL’s webpage, the No. 28 and 29 picks have been assigned to the teams that were knocked out in the Conference finals (though the New York Islanders ‘ selection belongs to the Ottawa Senators following the Jean-Gabriel Pageau trade), again in inverse order of the points percentage during the regular season. The Vegas Golden Knights, who lost to the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Final, have the No. 29 pick.

The Lightning, who defeated the Dallas Stars in Game 6 of the Final on Monday to win the Stanley Cup, get the No. 31 pick. That pick will go to the Sharks, who acquired it when they traded forward Barclay Goodrow to the Lightning on Feb. 24.

We all remember how the first 15 picks were made in the draft lottery earlier in June. Selections 16-27 belong to teams that lost in the first two rounds of the playoffs, in inverse order of the clubs’ regular-season points percentage. Many pundits have noticed that changes have been made and will need to readjust ahead of the event. Unlike previous years, the NHL didn't take division winners into account. As a result, the Washington Capitals and Colorado Avalanche were flipped at No. 24 and 25.

The draft had been scheduled for June 26-27 at Bell Centre in Montreal but was postponed March 25 due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. 

It will all take place online in just over a week.
