Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov is one of two players in the NHL being held out of the lineup for trade-related reasons, and many expect that a more could be made shortly.

Many teams have inquired about Gavrikov, who plays a solid defensive game, and carries an affordable $2.8-million cap hit. He is set to become an unrestricted free agent this July. Last month, the Blue Jackets had given Gavrikov’s agent permission to speak with other clubs about a contract extension.

While several clubs might have checked in with Gavrikov, who lacks no-trade protection, insider Frank Seravalli reports that there is somewhat of a front-runner in the sweepstakes, though it might change as the trade deadline grows near.

“Like [Jakob] Chychrun, Gavrikov has been pulled from the Blue Jackets’ lineup for asset protection as the Columbus zeroes in on a trade. One NHL GM this week referred to Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen as “The Dentist,” because he drills down on you until you submit. We’ve known for months that Columbus is looking to match or exceed the package they received for David Savard in 2021: first and third-round picks. Gavrikov is younger, and a more mobile defender. Sources indicate the Boston Bruins are the front-runner for Gavrikov’s services, but they are not alone.”

The Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs have also shown some interest, and the Los Angeles Kings, who are in the Chychrun sweepstakes, could turn to Gavrikov if they can’t reach a deal with the Arizona Coyotes.

The Jackets’ rumored asking price for Gavirkov is a first and a third-round pick. If the interested party is asking for Columbus to retain salary, Kekalainen could oblige if he gets a sweetener in the return package.

Will the Bruins come out on top to acquire Gavrikov or will another team get the edge before the March 3rd deadline?
