This was meant to happen. As soon as trade rumours emerged on New York Rangers’ Alexis Lafrenière, it was clear that suitors were going to call in and check on the price. However, one team might have a better chance and that’s the Vancouver Canucks.
According to Rick Dhaliwal, the Canucks have checked in on Lafrenière, who was made a healthy scratch last week by the Rangers. The relationship between the former first round pick and head coach Gerard Gallant is reportedly strained and it is believed that Lafreniere could be moved ahead of the trade deadline.
The Canucks have a huge advantage seeing that Lafrenière’s old agent is current assistant GM Emilie Castonguay in Vancouver.
Recently it was reported that the Rangers are looking for a first-round pick and a a top end player in a transaction for the young forward. There is a sense that some teams might be reluctant to trade for Lafrenière, who’s put up just five goals and 12 assists in 38 games. But a change of scenery might just be what he needs.
Vancouver might be the big shift he needs, all the way out West on a rebuilding team.
As Dhaliwal points out the Canucks were also one of the teams after Blackhawks forward Kirby Dach before he was traded to Montreal. Lafrenière might be just what’s needed in Vancouver.
