The hockey world is in mourning today with the passing of a man who had a tremendous influence on the sport being confirmed today by Hockey Canada.

Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun is reporting that Hockey Canada has confirmed the passing of former National Hockey League player Murray Costello, Costello was 90 years old.

Costello didn't have the most impressive NHL career, which is more than most can boast, playing 163 total NHL games split over several seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings, recording 13 goals and adding 19 assists for a total of 32 career points in the NHL.

Where he truly made his mark on the sport however was as one of the leading executives at Hockey Canada, serving as the organization's president for a period of 2 decades and earning himself a spot as a builder in the Hockey Hall of Fame in the process.

Hockey Canada has released the following statement:

Deeply saddened to learn that long-time executive Murray Costello, who led the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association and Hockey Canada as president for two decades, passed away Saturday at the age of 90, surrounded by his family.

I would like to extend my condolences to the Costello family and to all of the countless hockey players who were impacted by Costello's work during his many years at Hockey Canada who are mourning his passing today.
