A former National Hockey League enforcer has shared some truly devastating news.
On Friday, former St. Louis Blues, Hartford Whalers, and Toronto Maple Leafs forward Kelly Chase announced that he had once again been struck by leukemia.
Chase has been fighting the terrible disease since at least December of last year when he announced that he had been afflicted with leukemia, but had appeared to have undergone successful chemotherapy to treat the illness. Back in April of this year Chase shared an update via his social media indicating that he was going in for a 5th round of chemotherapy, and even received some shout outs from current NHL players, like Max Domi of the Toronto Maple Leafs, all of whom were wishing him luck in his battle.
"Round 5. Here we go. Just shook off the elbow pads and I’m about to punch this f&:/“kr right in the mouth," wrote Chase via social media back in April.
There is some good news here however, although the announcement is a terrible one to be sure, with Chase revealing that he has a brother that is a 100% bone marrow match. Chase also appears to be confident that he will once again get the better of the disease, and it is great to see him maintaining that positive attitude and fighting spirit despite the ordeal he has gone through over much of the last year.
"Yes I have a Round 2 with this punk called leukemia. With the support of these amazing Doctors [at the] Siteman Center and all my friends prayers and support, we are hoping for a similar outcome as Round 1," wrote chase this week. "I am ready to fight again and have a brother with 100% bone marrow match. I truly am grateful for everyone reaching out. I got this."
Chase took on all challengers during his 458 game NHL career, one that saw him earn a whopping 2017 penalty minutes over that stretch, and I will be rooting him on every step of the way as he continues to face the toughest challenge of his life.
