The Toronto Maple Leafs have been operating without a captain ever since the team traded away Dion Phaneuf, who at the time of the trade had been team captain for six years.
While many have viewed superstar forward Auston Matthews as the obvious heir apparent, head coach Mike Babcock has allowed Matthews to enter his sophomore season with awarding him the "C."
Matthews may not be captain yet, but on Friday he received a huge vote of confidence when one of the most respected Maple Leaf players' of all time said ge would cast his ballot for Matthews if he had one.
"In my book, he’s obviously the right person to be captain, no doubt about that," said former Leafs star Mats Sundin as per the Toronto Star. "He leads on the ice and you can tell he’s a good man off the ice.”
Matthews may not have the "C" on his chest just yet, but Sundin believes it's only matter of time, and furthermore believes that Matthews will go down as a great Maple Leafs captain.
“And he will be a great Maple Leaf captain.”
