A former first round pick has found himself on waivers today and could very well be playing for a new team in the National Hockey League come this time tomorrow.

On Saturday, the Carolina Hurricanes placed defenseman Ty Smith on waivers with the intention likely being to send Smith back down to the American Hockey League's Chicago Wolves where he has spent most of this season thus far. Smith, a former 18th overall selection by the New Jersey Devils at the 2018 NHL Entry Draft has only appeared in 8 games at the NHL level for the Hurricanes this season.

Smith could very well prove to be an intriguing option for some teams around the league given his very affordable cap hit and short term contract. The 24 year old is currently on a 1 year deal with a cap hit of just $775,000 which makes him a low risk/affordable type of option for teams looking to add depth on the blue line.

Over his 8 games in the NHL this season Smith has 1 goal and 1 assist for a total of 2 points on the season, he also has 4 penalty minutes and a plus minus rating of +1 to his name. Smith has played very well at the AHL level with 3 goals and 7 assists for a total of 10 points in just 13 games, boasting a plus minus rating of +11 and 23 penalty minutes at the AHL level this season.

Smith was acquired by the Hurricanes as part of the Jake Guentzel trade that sent Guentzel from the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Hurricanes and it will be interesting to see if the Penguins, or any other team for that matter, feel Smith is worthy of a spot on their roster.
