The Nashville Predators have lost their former first round pick, defenseman Dante Fabbro.

On Saturday, the Predators surprised many when they made the decision to place Fabbro on waivers and we now know that decision has cost them.

According to a report from National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman, the Columbus Blue Jackets have made the move to claim Fabbro off of waivers. This effectively grants the Blue Jackets the player for nothing, a pretty nice pick up when you consider that Fabbro was selected in the first round (17th overall) of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

The Blue Jackets will see Fabbro count against their cap moving forward, with Fabbro currently on a 1 year deal with an average annual value and salary cap hit of $2.5 million per season, but they have plenty of cap space to work with given some unfortunate injuries this season as well as the tragic passing of Johnny Gaudreau earlier this summer.

Fabbro had only appeared in 6 games this season for the Predators and had no goals, no assists, and no penalty minutes, currently boasting a plus minus rating of -3 on the season.

In fact Fabbro had not played since the 28th of October, when the Predators faced off against the Tampa Bay Lightning, and had been a healthy scratch since that time. Fabbro will likely get considerably more playing time now as a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Predators appear to have been willing to lose Fabbro given the decision to place him on waivers, but it was something of a strange move given that he at times slotted alongside defenseman Roman Josi on the team's top defensive pairing.
