Former Canadiens goalie retires at just 27 years old
This opportunity was too good to pass up.
Former Montreal Canadiens prospect Michael McNiven has announced his retirement from professional hockey after announcing that he has accepted an assistant coaching position with the Powell River Kings of the BCHL.
“My goal is to create an environment where our players have the best possible chance to succeed both mentally and physically.” says McNiven on the Kings' website.
“Having played in all three levels of professional hockey in North America, I am well versed in the demands and challenges our team will face. I am committed to bringing my utmost effort and expertise to win a Fred Page Cup.”
The 27 year old failed to crack the Habs' full-time roster, playing just one NHL game in his 7 year professional career. He suited up for a lone game in the 2021-22 season, playing just one period and allowing three goals. He also failed to take a starting role with the team's AHL affiliate Laval Rocket and bounched between the AHL and ECHL for much of his career.
All the best to him in his new role!
