All eyes are on Claude Giroux in Philadelphia as the trade deadline approaches and things got more serious on Tuesday night when Pierre LeBrun revealed on Insider Trading on TSN what the Flyers’ asking price is to pry the captain out of Philly.
“What the Flyers have told some teams that have called is if Giroux is ready to move, you’re talking about a player that arguably could be the most impactful rental at this year’s trade deadline. There’s a price attached to that.
If Nick Foligno as a rental went for a first and a fourth a year ago at the deadline, then Giroux is looking at a triple asset package for sure for the Flyers. A first, a young player, and a prospect or certainly at least two assets with higher quality. It’s a high price to get in on Giroux.”
It was recently reported that Giroux had made it clear to GM Chuck Fletcher that his preference is to accept a trade to the Colorado Avalanche. He reportedly has the Wild and Blues as secondary options. The Panthers are also very interested in Giroux, who might re-consider them, seeing that Florida is looking good this season, and is willing to get the boost up front it needs for a long run into the playoffs.
However, would one of these contenders be willing to part with a triple asset package to land Giroux?
The Flyers’ captain has a full no-trade clause and can turn down any deal that he doesn’t approve. He’s in the final year of a contract that pays him $8.25 million and will become an unrestricted free agent this upcoming offseason. With the Flyers well out of the playoff picture and with the team looking to make some rebuilding moves this offseason, it makes sense for them to ship out Giroux for some future assets.
Giroux has been a lifelong member of the Flyers since being drafted in the 1st round (22nd overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, having played all NHL games in his career with that franchise.
Interested teams know what he’s worth - he’s proven it despite the Flyers’ struggles and at the recent All-Star Game, and there is no doubt that Philadelphia get can a hefty return for Giroux.
