Professional sports teams have made sure in recent years to present a message of inclusiveness towards minority groups and have often celebrated theme nights during games, with many teams including celebrations of LGBT culture among their theme nights that also feature players wearing rainbow-themed jerseys along with pride themed tape during warmups.
There was a bit of controversy tonight involving Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov, who reportedly didn’t participate in the warmup skate at Wells Fargo Center prior to their game against the visiting Anaheim Ducks.
The Flyers released the following statement through a spokesman:
Flyers head coach John Tortorella confirmed afterward Provorov’s decision, saying that he cited his religious beliefs and that scratching him because of his choice wasn’t considered by the coaching staff.
