Florida columnist once again jabs Connor McDavid (and Canada)

He's right back at it with the Panthers leading the Cup Final 3-0.

There was a bit of controversy that developed prior to the start of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final between the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers, as one particular Florida-based columnist stirred the pot by calling out Oilers superstar captain Connor McDavid as "overrated".

Miami Herald columnist Greg Cote had thefollowing to say about McDavid prior to the start of the series:

“Connor McDavid is overrated. Boom. He puts up big, impressive stats, yes. Fine. But should he really be called ‘generational,’ called the best player in the sport, when in nine seasons he has yet to lead his team to a Stanley Cup?”

And now, with the Panthers on the cusp of winning the Stanley Cup after emerging victorious in the first three games of the series, Cote is taking what can be described as a written victory lap, doubling down on his earlier assessment of McDavid. What's more, he's including fellow star Leon Draisaitl in his latest jab:

"Connor McDavid has proved McOverrated (like a wise man once said) and Leon Draisaitl has been Dry-saital, neither scoring a goal in this Final,” he wrote. "Also, Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner has been pretty bad, and defenseman Darnell Nurse has been worse."

And just for some extra salt in the wound, he referenced the Canadian Stanley Cup drought that is all but certain to be extended to a 31st season.

"The country that invented hockey last won a Stanley Cup in 1993, and that country must be weeping in June yet again.

On the bright side, Canada, there’s still curling, eh?"

Despite the controversy that he caused, it appears as though Cote is going to have the last laugh. The Panthers have the chance to win their first Stanley Cup tomorrow night, and can do it on Edmonton's home ice.
