FLASHBACK: John Tortorella loses his mind, tries to storm Flames dressing room
This was one of the more infamous moments in NHL history.
It's certainly no secret that the marriage between the Vancouver Canucks and hard-nosed head coach John Tortorella wasn't exactly a match made in hockey heaven. Controversial decisions involving goaltenders, an attempted break-in of an opposition dressing room, and declaring Twitter usage verboten by his players were only a handful of things that led to his dismissal after just one season on the job.
Of course, a different coach found himself in the headlines this week for absolutely losing his mind against the coaching staff of an opponent. Michigan Wolverines basketball head coach Juwan Howard, a former NBA player, went absolutely nuts following yesterday afternoon's game against the Wisconsin Badgers on the hardwood.
For those unfamiliar with the story, let's set the scene. The genesis of the altercation began when Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard called a timeout with less than a minute remaining in regulation, despite enjoying a 19 point lead over the visiting Wolverines. An incensed Howard immediately began sharing words with Gard in the post-game handshake line, while Gard appeared to take Howard's arm.
This was the last straw for Howard, who then threw an attempted punch that connected with Wisconsin assistant coach Joe Krabbenhoft.
That immediately got me to thinking - which National Hockey League coach would come close to doing the same thing? Well, Torts immediately came to mind.
It was just over eight years ago that the infamous incident took place in which Tortorella exploded on the bench against then-Flames coach Bob Hartley for starting his fourth line against Vancouver's, leading to a line brawl to start the game. Of course, Tortorella then infamously tried to force his way into the Flames dressing room during the 1st intermission to confront Hartley; he would be suspended for 15 days by the NHL for his actions.
