Flames’ GM Craig Conory extremely confused over recent trade calls
A lot of confusion in Calgary over why contenders are calling about one specific player… Full story below:
There are a lot of rumours out there in the National Hockey League, especially in the weeks leading up to the trade deadline, and some end up happening and others get lost in chatter. However, there is one player that does not get why he’s been shoved into trade speculation. Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson has garnered interest around the league and even his own general manager Craig Conroy does not understand why he’s getting calls on his blue liner, seeing that he is not on the block. Pierre LeBrun reported this on last night’s Insider Trading on TSN:
“The Flames have no interest in trading him, point blank, and they’re a little confused as to why they’re getting calls from other teams checking in on his availability. What GM Craig Conroy has told other teams is “We’re not interested in trading Rasmus Andersson .”
“He’s not a player on an expiring deal, the Flames are in a playoff race, and in fact, the Flames hope to extend Rasmus Andersson potentially this summer when he’s allowed to extend one year out.
“That may or may not happen, but for now he is a Calgary Flame, and the Flames, they don’t want to tear it down. They want to keep some key veterans around as they continue to transition their roster, and Andersson is one of those players that the Flames want to be part of that.”
It’s a good thing that Conroy is standing behind his player and not looking to move him since Andersson has little say apart from his six-team no-trade list.
However, I am not surprised that Andersson is drawing plenty of attention on the market, and perhaps some contenders thought Conroy was looking, as he did last season, to make bold moves even if it cost his club a playoff berth. The Flames’ GM seems to be willing to retain players who want to stay and be part of the club’s future and continue on their better than expected season in Calgary.
I’m sure if there comes an offer the Flames cannot refuse Conroy will change his tune, however for now, he is keeping Andersson and hoping to sign him to a contract extension in July.
