The seat is getting out under Calgary Flames head coach Darryl Sutter. Last month, he was called into a meeting with general manager Brad Treliving after he disrespected young forward Jakob Pelletier during his NHL debut.

Sutter had already been under fire after Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman mentioned that the biggest issue in Calgary might be the head coach himself. It became clear that Sutter’s tough love approach might be getting out of hand.

The Flames are fighting for a playoff spot despite many fans expecting them to be top contenders this season after adding Jonathan Huberdeau, Nazem Kadri and MacKenzie Weegar during a busy summer.

However, Sutter can’t seem to motivate the players and last night, after a surprising 5-2 loss to the Detroit Red Wings, the head coach once again called out his own players, tossing them under the bus when facing media after the game.

“Goaltending certainly didn’t give us an opportunity to win, did it?” … He then paused, shook his head and got up.

Right before Sutter had commented: “I think there was a lack of emotion in our game. That’s a concern of mine. After long trips, I’ve seen it this year in the first game back a lot.”

“It’s a little bit of the leadership of the group,” Sutter replied when asked who was responsible for that.

The entire press conference prompted Huberdeau’s agent Allan Walsh to take a shot at Sutter.

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result,” wrote Walsh, on his Twitter account. “Also, negativity sucks the joy right out of players. cc: @NHLFlames”

Sutter may sit ninth on the NHL’s all-time wins list, but his coaching style isn’t known to be a favourite across the league. And maybe the Flames’ players are now making it clear they can work under him anymore. Fans certainly think so:
