What is up with the Edmonton Oilers, who themselves stated before the 2023-24 season got underway that it was “Cup or Bust” this year?! The Oilers fell 7-4 to the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night, the team’s first game without captain Connor McDavid who suffered an upper-body injury Saturday and is expected to miss a week or two.
But you can’t put the blame on McDavid’s absence alone. The Oilers took three different too many men on the ice penalties during the game! This led to Jason Gregor, the host of the Jason Gregor Show to voice his concerns on social media saying:
“Edmonton can’t lose to Nashville. And they can’t beat Minnesota. Also, how does an NHL team take three different too many men on the ice penalties? Embarrassing.”
His analysis prompted fans to share their concerns about the Oilers’ start to the season with a few pointing to the possibility that head coach Jay Woodcroft has lost the dressing room and should be replaced. Others demand significant changes on the blue line.
Former Oilers' defenseman Ryan Whitney also struggled to understand what is happening in Edmonton at the moment. The Oilers are trending from all the wrong reasons...
"Frozen Frenzy was awesome. Action everywhere, great goals and some wild finishes. Unfortunately my lasting impression of the night will be the Edmonton Oilers getting not one, not two but three too many men on the ice penalties. THREE!"
When McDavid’s injury was confirmed, Woodcroft had emphasized his captain’s absence is an opportunity for other players to step up.
It seems like everyone in the organization needs to do so or else it was be Bust and not Cup this spring…
