Fans lash out at Scottie Upshall after his statement on the Hockey Canada scandal.
Upshall taking heat on social media.
A series of sexual assault scandals have shaken Hockey Canada to it's core and, although there are still investigations being conducted into all of these matters, as the fallout continues more and more players are speaking out as they seek to distance themselves from the scandals.
The most recent statement came over the weekend when, on Saturday, former National Hockey League forward Scottie Upshall took to social media and issued a statement regarding the accusations that have surfaced about Canada’s 2003 World Juniors team. Upshall, a former first round draft pick, published the following statement:
"I fully support thorough investigations by the police and the NHL into the claims made in the media yesterday about Canada’s 2003 World Juniors team," he wrote on Twitter.
While it may have looked like your run of the mill statement from a player trying to distance himself from the story, some fans have been quick to lash out at Upshall for what he didn't say in his statement. Here are just a few of the examples we can share with you:
I'm sure it will come as no surprise to you to learn that the majority of the people making these kind of comments are doing so from anonymous accounts.
For some context on the backlash against Upshall specifically, all of the players who have come out with statements prior to his own have thus far gone out of their way to deny any knowledge or involvement in the incident, something that fans have obviously been quick to notice was missing from Upshall's statement.
For example, here are the statements released by Carlo Colaiacovo and P.A. Parenteau last week regarding the same incident in 2003:
I can't stress enough that this is by no means an admission of guilt on Upshall's part nor does it confirm that he was in anyway involved in this alleged incident. The fact of the matter is that no one but Upshall himself knows why he did not include something to that effect in his statement, and the reason could be something as simple as a mere oversight.
