Fans are losing patience with Morgan Rielly.
Fans are quickly starting to turn their backs on the once beloved Maple Leafs defenseman.
It would appear as though fans are starting to lose patience with Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly, and there's no doubt in my mind that internally the Maple Leafs are having some concerns as well.
Rielly has seen a significant dip in his offensive production this season, all while he has struggled on the defensive end of the ice as well, and the numbers reflect those facts.
Over 72 games last year Rielly produced 7 goals and 51 assists for a total of 58 points (0.81 points per game), but this season those numbers have dropped considerably with 7 goals and 27 assists, a total of 34 points over 70 games (0.49 points per game).
I mentioned that Rielly has struggled on the defensive side of the puck as well, despite getting more offensive zone starts under head coach Craig Berube, and a very easy and ugly way to look at that is to compare him to the rest of his team. While the Maple Leafs sit at a +16 goal differential this season, Rielly himself boasts an ugly plus minus rating of -21 on the season so far.
It was Rielly's poor play on one particular goal on Saturday night however, as the Maple Leafs gave up 5 unanswered goals to the lowly Nashville Predators, that appears to have been the straw that broke the camel's back.
To say that the response from fans has been harsh would be an understatement, with several openly questioning whether or not Rielly should even be on the team any longer. Here are only a few examples:
These responses received hundred of likes suggesting that this is not some isolated pocket of angry fans, and if the fans are seeing it you can bet the Maple Leafs have taken notice as well.
Is everyone being too harsh on Morgan Rielly? Or have things gone so badly this season that a change should genuinely be on the table? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
