Evander Kane accused of “causing drama” at the worst time possible!

The Oilers managed to win Game 1 of the WCF in double overtime, but…

It has been revealed throughout the postseason that Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane has been dealing with a sports hernia all season long, and has been fighting through the pain to support his team amidst the playoff run.

Then, on Thursday, it was revealed that the Oilers had filed a complaint with the NHL over their fans treatment of Kane. Specifically, the NHL complained about a sign that the ‘Green Men’ displayed alongside the penalty box that poked fun at Kane’s history of gambling. The sign read ‘Evander… what’s the parlay tonight?’

This came a few days after Sportsnet’s Mark Spector called out the Oilers winger, accusing him of causing unnecessary drama at the wrong time of the season. On the air of The Jason Gregor Show, Spector commented:

"As has been the case all of Kane’s career, too much drama boys. Too much drama around Evander Kane. Useless drama. … This is needless drama that you don’t need starting the playoffs, that you don’t want in your dressing room. … he runs his course as the bringer of drama.”

I mean, from the start when the Oilers brought him, I personally thought who would want a drama magnet like that in their dressing room? As you know, Kane has been dealing with significant financial issues ever since it was reported that he had filed for bankruptcy due to a gambling addiction. In judicial papers filed, it was reported that he wagered sometimes as often as 50 times a day, and was in significant debt in spite of overall career earnings that have reached $76 million. I can’t say I’m a fan of Kane after all that’s been said about his behaviour towards women, notably his ex wife Anna, who had publicly accused Kane of infidelity and abandoning their family, while also claiming that the then-San Jose Shark was gambling on NHL games.

And so I can’t disagree with Spector. However, amidst this playoff and with Edmonton facing the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference final, with a 1-0 lead in the series, I can’t say the drama has been an issue that much.

It could be a huge problem if ever Kane hoists the Stanley Cup only to pawn it days later to settle his debts. :P
