Enraged player attacks linesman while being escorted off the ice.
An enraged player attacks a linesman after the linesman attempts to throw him out of the game.
I think it is safe to say that this play likely won't be playing any games for a very long time, at least not in the league in which this shocking incident occurred.
Last week, during a game in the Federal Prospects Hockey League between the Mississippi Sea Wolves and the Baton Rouge Zydeco,a linesman found himself on the receiving end of a physical assault from one of the players he likely should have least expected it from.
During the final 6 minutes of the game's third period, with the score already heavily in favor of the Zydeco who were leading 5-1 at the time, a scrum would break out that resulted in some pushing and shoving between players on both teams. After the scrum Mississippi Sea Wolves' Justin Barr was being escorted to the penalty box when he began to struggle against the referee that was very clearly directing him away from the other players on the ice and towards the penalty box.
As Barr continued to push back against the linesman that very same linesman would become more forceful in his attempts to bring Barr to the box which would in turn result in Barr continuing to push back even harder. Having had enough of Barr's antics, the linesman would instead decide to remove him from the game entirely, and that appeared to be the moment that would set Barr off.
Barr then did the unthinkable for a captain of a team, shoving the linesman to the ice before skating towards the opposing players on the ice clearly looking for another violent confrontation.
The referee would attempt to stop Barr from reaching those players, but Barr would avoid him causing the referee to fall to the ice as well.
On Sunday, after having time to reflect on what a poor decision he had made, Barr issued a public apology for his actions.
From Barr:
Sea Wolves Fans,
First off I want to thank so many of you who have reached out since last night and offered your support. The community here on the Gulf Coast is second to none and I'm honored to wear the C for the Sea Wolves and play here in my adopted city.
Secondly, I want to apologize to the officials last night, my teammates, coaches, and of course all of you amazing fans. During the third period last night frustration and defending my teammates got the better of my judgement. During the play where I was kicked out of the game the goaltender attempted to take my feet out from under me as my back was turned. I got up and followed him and words were said. The officials came in restraining me and I saw one of my teammates, Philip Wong, surrounded by Zydeco and one reach around his neck. My instinct was to defend my teammate so I tried to get away from the official and I repeatedly told him to let me go. When we arrived at the penalty box while the linesman continued to try to push me inside the referee told me to go to the locker room. Due to my frustration I pushed the linesman who fell down. The referee then grabbed at me and fell over off balance as I went back down the ice.
It is never ok to put your hands on an official and I do truly apologize for having done so, but the game we play is an emotional one. I apologize for my actions and recognize there will be consequences from the league, but I wanted to make sure that I was able to say there was no intent or malice towards the officials and that I am sorry for stepping over that line.
No word yet on what consequences Barr will face for his actions last week.
