We're now just under two months away from when the Detroit Red Wings will gather in northern Michigan for Training Camp, and there have already been numerous additions and subtractions to the squad that barely missed out on qualifying for the Stanley Cup Playoffs this past spring for what would have been the first time since 2016.

Among the subtractions the Red Wings made in recent weeks was trading defenseman Jake Walman to the San Jose Sharks for future considerations, a deal that has left many scratching their heads. The trade has been criticized by fans and analysts alike, leading to speculation that there was something happening behind the scenes that fans were not aware of.

The Red Wings were also unable to retain offensive-minded defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere, who chose to return to the Carolina Hurricanes with a three-year contract. The Red Wings did secure the services of former New York Rangers defenseman Erik Gustafsson, a move Detroit hopes will go toward reducing their goals against.

Veteran Jeff Petry still has one year remaining on his current deal, while the Red Wings also have Olli Maatta and Ben Chiarot under contract.

Meanwhile, towering Swede Simon Edvinsson is expected to land himself a full-time gig with Detroit this fall after cutting his teeth in the American Hockey League. What might Detroit's defensive pairings for 2024-25 look like? Take a peek at the early projections via The Daily Faceoff

Defensive pairing No. 1: Ben Chiarot - Moritz Seider

Defensive pairing No. 2: Simon Edvinsson - Jeff Petry
