On the first day of training camp for the Utah HC, forward Dylan Guenther was on the right wing of the team’s second line, paired with Logan Cooley at center and Lawson Crouse on the left.

The 21-year-old has played just 78 games in the NHL, but on Friday, is nearing a max-term extension with the Utah HC. The pending RFA winger will reportedly signed an eight-year extension at slightly above $7M per, yielding a total value of at least $56MM, according to insider Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.

The team made it official moments later, announcing an eight-year deal with a $7.14MM cap hit.

Guenther arguably had a breakout season last year with the Arizona Coyotes, collecting a total of 35 points in 45 games, including 18 goals, with four of them game-winners.

He definitely deserves to get a competitive contract, however, the newest NHL franchise is really putting it all out there for the young winger.

At the Coyotes’ camp last season, was one of the final cuts and was shipped to the AHL’s Tucson Roadrunners where he opened the campaign and collected 28 points in 29 games. The big club recalled him in January.

When the deal is confirmed and goes through, it will become the Utah HC’s richest deal since the franchise took over for the Coyotes. He’ll likely be the team’s second-highest-paid forward starting next season behind teammate Clayton Keller and his $7.15MM cap hit.

Many see Guenther as a future cornerstone piece in Utah and he certainly gets paid to be just that. He was selected ninth overall in 2021 by Arizona, and will now lead the way for the NHL's newest club.
