Don Cherry names his pick to be the next coach of the Bruins.
Cherry throws a out a name.
The Boston Bruins find themselves without a head coach after the surprise firing of head coach Bruce Cassidy last week, and no doubt the organization's management will now look to act quickly to find Cassidy's replacement. There are a number of teams currently in the market for a head coach, so time is of the essence.
Over the weekend reports emerged indicating that the Bruins have 3 names on their coaching wish list, with those names being that of former New York Islanders head coach Barry Trotz, former Providence Bruins head coach Jay Leach, and somewhat surprisingly former New York Rangers head coach David Quinn.
It may very well be that one of those 3 men will become the next head coach of the franchise, but on Sunday former Boston Bruins head coach Don Cherry suggested a 4th name that he believes should get consideration for the role. Speaking on his weekly podcast the longtime Bruins loyalist gave a shout out to former Boston Bruins forward Marc Savard, a highly respected former player and one who has quickly taken to coaching since retiring as a player in the National Hockey League.
"You know a good guy to be hiring if you're the Boston Bruins is Marc Savard," said Cherry on his podcast.
Cherry pointed to the fact that Savaard is currently having success in the Ontario Hockey League with the Windsor Spitfires, who are currently competing in the OHL playoffs in Savard's first season as head coach.
"He's with the Windsor Spitfires now," said Cherry. "And he knows what's going on."
Savard is relatively inexperienced behind the bench as a coach though, having only worked as an assistant coach at the NHL level and then only briefly with the St. Louis Blues. That being said, as Cherry points out, he does have strong ties to the Bruins organization as a former player who spent several seasons in Boston. In his first season behind the bench, the Spitfires boasted a record of 44 - 17 - 7, so he must being doing something right.
Whether or not he's ready to make the jump to the NHL is another matter, but Cherry seems to think so.
