The 2024-25 NHL season is less than a month away, but we are still missing the action. However, in the MLB, it’s full of it, especially thanks to one amazing player.

Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtami etched his name in the baseball history books as the founder of the 50-home run, 50-stolen bases club on Thursday night. Ahead of his contest against the Florida Marlins last night, Ohtani needed one stolen base and two home runs to become the first player in major league history to reach the milestone. He reached the feat with exuberant fashion, going five-for-five at the plate with two home runs and two stolen bases. His second homer is the one that sealed the milestone, a two-run shot that went 391 feet, and the Dodgers up 14-3 in the seventh inning in the process. The game ended 20-4 for Los Angeles.

On social media, there were many reactions to Ohtani reaching the historic 50/50 mark…now already bumped up to 51/51, and one came from ex-MLB player Jose Canseco, who congratulated the Dodgers’ star with this message:

“35 years ago I created the 40/40 club,” Canseco said, reminiscing about his 1988 MVP season with the Oakland Athletics. Shohei Ohtani created the 50/50 club tonight. Congratulations to him.”

While Canseco meant well with his message, fans immediately targeted him, harshly reminding him of his controversial past in the league since he admitted to using steroids during his active years in the majors. Fans’ congratulatory messages for Ohtani quickly turned to attacks towards Canseco.

“You created the 40/40 club? 40 cc of Test and 40 grams of powder maybe”

“I think you meant to say that 35 years ago your pharmacist created the 40/40 club”

“Shohei is clean and you were juiced on steroids”

Ohtani’s incredible performance is truly deserving of everyone’s respect. Too bad this message from Canseco turned into controversy around the amazing feat.

So far in the 2024 MLB campaign, Ohtani is hitting 294/.376/.629 with 51 home runs, 120 RBIs, 51 stolen bases and 77 walks. He also has an incredible 181 OPS+ .

He was signed under the unique terms to a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers in December.
