Devastating update on Oilers defenseman Mattias Ekholm.
The worst possible scenario for the Edmonton Oilers just before the Stanley Cup playoffs.
There is no sugar coating this one folks.
A devastating update has just come down for the Edmonton Oilers, one that could drastically impact this team's fortunes when it comes to the Stanley Cup playoffs.
The news was broken by Oilers reporter Ryan Rishaug, who revealed on Saturday that veteran defenseman Mattias Ekholm may be done for the remainder of the 2024-2025 National Hockey League season. Ekholm's status has not yet been officially confirmed, with Rishaug indicating that there needs to be further testing done to confirm the severity of this injury, but it sounds like this is going to be a very serious injury regardless of the outcome of those tests.
Ekholm is of course an integral part of the Edmonton Oilers blue line and was pivotal in their most recent run to the Stanley Cup Final. Losing a player of his caliber at this stage of the season would be a devastating blow for any team, and in the case of the Oilers it isn't like they have an abundance of depth on the blue line.
Ekholm was again solid this season with 9 goals and 24 assists for a total of 33 points over his 65 regular season appearances, and now only time will tell whether or not he will get the chance to add to his playoff totals as an Oiler this season as well.
