The season came to a close for the Detroit Red Wings last night, despite their shootout victory over the Montreal Canadiens. Unfortunately, the Washington Capitals earned the 2nd Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference thanks to their win over the Philadelphia Flyers, and they held the tie-breaker.
David Perron broke through with one last act of late-game heroism last night, beating goaltender Cayden Primeau with a shot from the point with just 3.3 seconds left in regulation to keep Detroit's hopes alive. The sad reality is that it would eventually be all for naught, as the aforementioned situation played out in Philadelphia, rendering Detroit's victory as nothing more than a positive to end the regular season on.
For Perron, he posted a heartfelt message on his social media account, and even revealed that his young son Mason prayed for a miracle game-tying goal moments before it took place:
"Wings fans, Thanks for helping Little Caesars Arena be the best atmosphere in the league this year! The pain is real but I feel our group made unreal steps forward this year and will be beneficial for years to come. I’m proud of the team and the fight that we had as well as being able to come through was one of the highest moments (Mason prayed silently hoping we would score just prior to the face off of the tying goal which once I heard after the game gave me the proudest feeling but also devastated for him! that’s what sports is all about) THANK YOU"
Perron is set to become an unrestricted free-agent this summer, though it was speculated earlier in the season that GM Steve Yzerman could be considering bringing him back for another year owing to his leadership skills and presence in the dressing room.
