Dave Tippett makes major announcement after being fired by the Oilers.

Tippett does it quietly.

The Edmonton Oilers may have not only ended Dave Tippett's tenure as a head coach within their organization, it sounds like in firing Tippett they may have written the final chapter of his career as a head coach in the National Hockey League altogether.

The Oilers made the decision to fire Tippett on the 10th of February after the team continued to struggle with significant issues around the consistency of their play. It marked the first time that Oilers general manager Ken Holland had fired a coach in the middle of an ongoing NHL season, but Holland express that he felt the need to make a change given that the Oilers still had a chance of making the playoffs.

In spite of the fact that he would in the end lose his job, Tippett had the Oilers looking like one of the top teams in the NHL early on in the regular season, but the wheels would quickly fall off with the Oilers sliding all the way out of contention under Tippett's leadership.

Tippett hasn't said a great deal since being fired by the Oilers but recently Arizona Coyotes insider Craig Morgan was able to catch up with Tippett and speak to him about his future as a head coach in the NHL. According to comments Tippett made to Morgan it sounds like there is no future in that regard, with Morgan reporting that the plan for the future is for the 60 year old head coach to move onto retirement.

According to Morgan, Tippett is currently building a house in Flagstaff, Arizona and the plan is to go out quietly. There are no big interviews to be forthcoming and given how quiet Tippett has been since his departure from Edmonton I suspect that this is exactly how he wants it to be.

Tippett has had a lengthy career as a head coach in the NHL with 6 seasons as head coach of the Dallas Stars, 5 seasons as the head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes, 3 seasons as the head coach of the Arizona Coyotes and most recently 3 seasons behind the bench of the Edmonton Oilers.

I wish him nothing but the best with his retirement.
