Darren Dreger on the changes coming to the Maple Leafs.
The insider shares his thoughts.
The Toronto Maple Leafs suffered another early first round playoff exit on Saturday night when they were unable to overcome the back to back Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning in the 7th and final game of their opening round series.
As you would expect given this group's recent history of first round playoff exits the reaction to Saturday night's loss has been perfectly level headed and well reasoned, ok maybe not. Many have been calling for wholesale changes to be made to the organization and to the roster, but those who are hoping for truly significant changes in the offseason may be left sorely disappointed.
Quickly following the game National Hockey League insider Darren Dreger shared his thoughts on the what the future will hold for the Maple Leafs after what will be viewed by some as yet another failure. In what may come as a surprise to some, Dreger indicated that things are very likely to remain status quo moving forward after the Leafs lost a first round matchup to what is a very tough playoff opponent.
"There will [be] changes to the Maple Leafs roster based on salary cap and free agency, but, I don’t foresee drastic changes or sense that the coach or GM are in trouble," said Dreger following the loss in Game 7. "Toronto made strides this season and faced a great opponent in [an] entertaining 7 game series."
Toronto Maple Leafs superfan Steve Dangle also shared this rather levelheaded take following the Game 7 loss to the Lightning. Dangle, who is a Toronto Maple Leafs superfan, took the loss in stride and appeared to be hopeful for the future in spite of the fact that his favorite team had just been eliminated.
Perhaps this will be a reflection of how a significant segment of the Maple Leafs fan base will view this loss differently than some of their first round playoff exits of the past.
It would appear as though the likes of Sheldon Keefe, Kyle Dubas and even Brendan Shanahan are likely to be safe... at least for now.
