Darnell Nurse facing suspension/fine for cross check on Quinton Byfield
NHL Player Safety punishes the Oilers defenseman.
UPDATE: NHL Player Safety has announced that indeed Darnell Nurse will have a supplemental discipline hearing this evening for his cross check on Quinton Byfield.
Read below for our earlier report on this story and on last night's game between the two teams.
In case you missed it last night, the Los Angeles Kings absolutely THUMPED an undermanned Edmonton Oilers squad.
The Kings walked away with a 5-0 victory but lost star forward Quinton Byfield thanks to a dumb play by Oilers defender Darnell Nurse. During a scrum around the Oilers' net, Nurse laid a nasty crosscheck to the back of a downed Byfield, taking Byfield out of the game.
Check it out:
Such a stupid, unnecessary play that has absolutely nothing to do with the game of hockey.
After the game Kings forward Philip Danault was asked about the Oilers' dirty play and particularly about Nurse's cross check to the back of a downed Byfield. Danault matter of factly stated that he feels the Oilers dressed their "B Squad" and that their intention wasn't to win the hockey game but rather to injure the Kings in preparation for the playoff matchup next week.
Oilers veteran Corey Perry was informed of Danault's comments by the media and had a true "WTF" reaction.
Check it out:
To be fair... Nurse does this sort of stuff regardless of his team's roster, the score of the game or the alignment of the planets, it seems. It's sometimes like his brain shuts off and he just sees red. I wouldn't take much from this act, to be honest.
It'll be interesting to see what, if any, supplemental discipline that Nurse receives from NHL Player Safety, however.
Still no update on Byfield's injury status, standby for more information.
