The NHL’s Department of Player Safety has just announced on Wednesday that Arizona Coyotes’ Jason Zucker will have a hearing later this evening for boarding/interference on Florida Panthers’ Nick Cousins.

The incident occurred in last night’s game when Zucker went after Cousins near the side boards. Cousins is known to be a vocal and pesky player so many believe Zucker was trying to get some retaliation for something that was said. He also hit Juuso Valimaki in a vulnerable spot, and has been known this season to get away with questionable hits.

Tempers quickly flared and Cousins’ teammate defenseman Gustav Forsling challenged Zucker right after his move. An intense exchange of heavy punches ended with Zucker’s helmet flying off his head and officials handing out penalties.

Jason Zucker received a 10-minute game misconduct, a five-minute fighting penalty, and an additional five-minute penalty for boarding, served by Zach Sanford. As for the Panthers, Forsling got a 10-minute misconduct, a five-minute fighting penalty and a two-minute instigator penalty, served by Anton Lundell.

The Coyotes’ indiscipline cost them as they ended up losing 4-1 at the hands of the Panthers.

It remains to be seen later today or on Thursday if Zucker will be suspended for his hit near the boards. Several fans are upset with the decision and are, of course, called out the league’s Safety Department for its decision to even have a hearing with the veteran forward. Here are some reactions from social media:

However, I must say that this incident is easily avoidable and is extremely dangerous. It simply shouldn’t have happened… On Wednesday Panthers head coach Paul Maurice announced that Cousins was in concussion protocol and is likely to miss tomorrow's game. Which won't help Zucker in his hearing.

The Coyotes are back in action on Thursday night when they host the New York Islanders.
